Bevan Docherty and Nicky Samuels win 2010 PHLYTRI
Fellow New Zealanders take the points lead in the
2010 Lifetime Fitness Triathlon Series Race To The Toyota Cup.
June 27, 2010 (Philadelphia, PA) – New Zealand’s Bevan Docherty and Nicky Samuels won the 6th Annual Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon on Sunday. The sixth anniversary event, changed to a 5k run, 40k bike and 10K run duathlon, also served as the first stop in the 2010 Lifetime Fitness Triathlon Series Race To The Toyota Cup.
The pro field battled for the event’s $31,000 purse with Docherty and Samuels each taking home an $8,000 first place prize. In addition to the cash prizes, Docherty and Samuels each take the early points lead in the Life Time Fitness Triathlon Series Race to the Toyota Cup.
In the men’s pro race, Bevan Docherty took the early lead on the 5K run with three-time PHLYTRI champion David Thompson close behind. Docherty flatted within in the final 1K of the bike but was able to hold off Thompson on the 10k run, winning in a time of 1:49:11. Thompson finished: 36 back and Bermuda’s Tyler Butterfield took third place.
In the women’s field Nicky Samuels took an early lead on the first run, through T1 and onto the bike, with USA’s Jenna Shoemaker close behind. Shoemaker was able to pass Samuels towards the end of the ride and came into T2 a few seconds ahead. Samuels was able to quickly make up the ground on the run and overcame Shoemaker to take the win with a time of 2:02:20. Shoemaker finished: 15 behind in second place. Nicole Kelleher, also from the USA, rounded out the podium taking third place.
The 2010 Life Time Fitness Triathlon Series Race to the Toyota Cup is made up of six of the most prominent international-distance triathlon events in the United States. The total Series Professional Division cash purse includes $353,000 in individual race awards plus a $68,000 Series Bonus. Toyota recently bolstered the Series prize purse to include the 2010 Toyota Prius vehicles – one each to be awarded to the top female and male champions determined at the Toyota U.S. Open Triathlon in Dallas.
The Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon is one of the top triathlons in the U.S. Founded in 2005, the race has grown from a one day event into a weekend triathlon festival with three days of competition and activities.
