David Thompson Wins, Rebeccah Wassner Repeats at the 2008 Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon presented by Suzuki

Philadelphia Insurance Companies Announces Three-year Title Sponsorship Extension

June 22, 2008 (Philadelphia, PA) - David Thompson scored a come from behind win and Rebeccah Wassner defended her title today at the 2008 Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon presented by Suzuki. Sunday's Olympic-distance race capped off a weekend of multisport events including a Sprint-distance triathlon, Kids Fun Run and Duathlon on Saturday.

In the men’s race, Thompson had to overcome a 1:30 gap to catch 18-year-old Andrew Yoder who took the lead by logging the fastest bike split of the day. Thompson finally caught Yoder with 1.5 miles to go in the run. Yoder stayed with him for almost a minute until Thompson was able to get a gap and pulled away for the victory in 1:50:41 -- :42 ahead of Yoder. Joe Gambles rounded out the podium in third. The win was Thompson’s second at the Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon having also won the race in 2006.

In the women’s field Rebeccah Wassner defended her 2007 title with a time of 2:03:25. Wassner finished 1:07 ahead of second place finisher Alicia Kaye. Rebeccah’s twin sister/first year pro Laurel Wassner rounded out the podium taking third place.

At Sunday’s award ceremony, James J. Maguire, Jr., President and CEO, Philadelphia Insurance Companies, announced a three-year extension of the company’s title sponsorship.

On Saturday, Todd Stackhouse, Bryn Mawr, PA and Leslie Randall, Royersford, PA won the men’s and women’s divisions of the Sprint distance event. There was also a Kids Fun Run and Duathlon held on Saturday after the Sprint race.

Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon presented by Suzuki has staked its claim as one of the top triathlons in the U.S. Founded in 2005, the race has grown from a one day event into a weekend triathlon festival with three days of competition and activities.
